Optic glioma

Optic Glioma NF1 patients sometimes develop optic gliomas, which are tumors of the optic nerve. Connecting the eye and the brain, the optic nerve is responsible for eyesight.
  • Do optic gliomas ever become cancerous? These tumors rarely become cancerous.
  • Do they interfere with eyesight? While they can result in blindness, optic gliomas usually do not cause any harmful symptoms.
  • When do they show up? Optic gliomas usually appear during childhood.
  • How common are they? About 20 percent of children with NF1 develop optic gliomas.
