Optic glioma

NF1 patients sometimes develop optic gliomas, which are tumors
of the optic nerve. Connecting the eye and the brain, the optic nerve
is responsible for eyesight.

- Do optic gliomas ever become cancerous? These tumors rarely become cancerous.
- Do they interfere with eyesight? While they can result in blindness, optic gliomas usually do not cause any harmful symptoms.
- When do they show up? Optic gliomas usually appear during childhood.
- How common are they? About 20 percent of children with NF1 develop optic gliomas.
